Hidden Helpers: Recognizing the Role of Child Providers of Home Health, Long-Term and Hospice Care

Aging in America, the 2012 Annual Conference of the American Society on Aging takes place March 28–April 1 in Washington, DC.

Be sure to attend the session presented by Connie Siskowski, RN, PhD, American Association of Caregiving Youth and Ronnette Virginia Smith, MSLE, Senior Manager, Corporate Affairs, Walmar

More than a million children in the United States are caregiving, most often assisting a parent or grandparent. These unrecognized providers of care take on duties of ADLs and IADLs. Their stresses are similar to adult caregivers in terms of depression and/or anxiety, health problems and isolation; plus they have school difficulties and stigmatization by peers. This session will describe how the aging community is in a unique position to identify these at-risk children and provide resources to improve the well-being of children and families.
